What would our founders think? July 4th column by Gary Mienert

What would our founders think? This is the fourth year I’ve been privileged to write a column for the Lakeland Times for Independence Day.  It is an honor for me to do so.  With celebratory intentions I’ve always attempted to write about our glorious nation and its bright future. Apologizing in advance, this column will not entirely reflect that objective. Our founding fathers provided us with two of the greatest documents ever written: The Declaration of Independence which we celebrate today and the Constitution. Those two magnificent instruments set us apart from every nation in the world, guiding us as we became the model for others to follow. How would our founding fathers judge us today? Thomas Paine’s musings from the distant past offers us a partial answer to that question. He wrote: “A thousand years hence, perhaps less, America may be what Europe is now…the noblest work of human wisdom, the grand scene of human glory, the fair cause of freedom that rose and fell.”  What would possibly cause him to prophesize the fall of the United States? A significant concern was explained succinctly by Thomas Jefferson as he philosophized “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free,…

The Missiles of Holy Week and the Rule of Law By Judge Andrew P. Napolitano April 13, 2017 The history of the world is the history of violence. I had planned to write this column about the most critical act of violence in human history and its superhuman aftermath — the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter, which celebrates His resurrection in a few days, is the centerpiece of all Christian belief. Without the risen Christ, we are doomed. Only with Him can we be saved. An old Irish priest told me in my youth that Easter means there is hope for the dead. And if there is hope for the dead, there is hope for the living. But the living must do more than just hope, because governments continue to crush hope with violence, irrespective of moral and legal norms. Last week, as Holy Week was approaching, the United States launched 59 cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield because President Donald Trump was morally repulsed at the use of poison gas in Syria in the days preceding. Trump argued that the gas could only have been deployed intentionally by the Syrian government on its own people and that…

No Rock River Patriots Meeting on Friday April 14th, 2017

There will be NO Rock River Patriots meeting on April 14th.  Our normal meeting date lands on Good Friday.  Since many of our members will be attending church services, we felt the best option is to cancel the meeting.

VOTE TODAY!

Believe it or not, spring election day is upon us. Today April 4th, 2017 has an important WI statewide race for school superintendent between liberal incumbent Tony Evers and challenger Lowell Holtz. Evers supports Common Core while Holtz opposes it. If you support FEDERAL control of education, then Evers is your man. If you support LOCAL control of education (the way it should be), then Holtz is the candidate you should support. It’s a classic case of liberal establishment verses reformer. We know how you should vote. Other races are on the ballot. If you live in a school district that is having a spending referendum, we would simply encourage you to vote “NO”. School Districts, like all of us, need to live within their means and budgets. All too often school districts are bloated at the top with overpaid administrators. The money is not going into the classroom. Carefully examine candidates at the local level. If you are not sure where they stand, find out. Fort Atkinson common council has one candidate who claimed recently that the community is so safe that the police do not need to carry guns! That is what’s out there folks! Be careful!
