March 8, 2014 Letter to the Editor, On Thur Feb 6 th , the people’s voice was stymied, by an orchestrated public hearing lead by Sen.Luther Olsen who is chairman of the Senate Education Committee. The hearing was on Senate Bill 619 co-sponsored by Senator Leah Vukmir and Senator Paul Farrow. I try to attend various legislative hearings in Madison and other locations around the state, particularly those I have a vested interest in. Being a school board member, I have had considerable interest in the implementation of Common Core standards in our state’s public schools. I don’t know what is more galling to me, the political gamesmanship proffered by Sen Luther Olsen with his AP interview two hours before the hearing was held, stating that this Bill was dead, the preferential treatment given the DPI, CESA administrators, our district school superintendent and their staff and supportive teachers, or the subsequent AP article published in the Watertown Times Fri. The Rock River Patriots are meeting on Friday February 14th at 6:00 pm in the Community Room at the Dwight Foster Library in Fort Atkinson. The Dwight Foster Library is located at 209 Merchants Avenue. At this meeting we will discuss current events, initiatives, and anticipate receiving a legislative update from one of our representatives. Amendment II A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. In the days when this amendment was written, the militia meant every adult able to bear arms. The militia was not the regular army. The term “regulated” was not a legal term at that time, but a mechanical one. A regulator was any mechanical device used to make something work better. A spin-ball governor was used to “regulate” the speed of a steam engine, as one example. A “Well Regulated” militia meant a militia with all the proper equipment needed to do their job better. That meant good weapons with good sights. After all, what use is a militia if they cannot hit what they are aiming at? The Second Amendment is not about target shooting or hunting. At the time, hunting was indispensable for survival in the new nation, especially when food crops were unavailable. Security and Self-Governance by Ron Paul The senseless and horrific killings last week at a movie theater in Colorado reminded Americans that life is fragile and beautiful, and we should not take family, friends, and loved ones for granted. Our prayers go out to the injured victims and the families of those killed. As a nation we should use this terrible event to come together with the resolve to create a society that better values life. We should also face the sober reality that government cannot protect us from all possible harm. No matter how many laws we pass, no matter how many police or federal agents we put on the streets, no matter how routinely we monitor internet communications, a determined individual or group can still cause great harm. We as individuals are responsible for our safety and the safety of our families. Furthermore, it is the role of civil society rather than government to build a culture of responsible, peaceful, productive individuals. Government cannot mandate morality or instill hope in troubled individuals.
